If you have gaps left in your mouth from missing teeth, you’ll know that this can cause problems with eating and speech. Dentures can help to resolve these issues and restore your confidence too.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are removable false teeth. They are made from acrylic, nylon or metal. Dentures are designed to fit comfortably over the gums to replace the missing teeth and fill any gaps.
If all of your teeth or they need to be removed, you are most likely to require complete dentures. If you have only one or two missing teeth, you will require partial dentures.
Complete Dentures
The dentist will take measurements and moulds of your mouth and will use those to order a set of dentures that will fit snugly over your gums. The dentist will usually fit a trial set of dentures first, so that you can check that they fit correctly and are comfortable. The dentist can then make any necessary adjustments before fitting the full set.
Partial Dentures
Your dentist will measure your mouth and order your partial dentures. The partial denture usually clips on to your existing teeth where it is held securely in the mouth.
Taking Care of Your Dentures
It may take a little while to get used to your dentures, they may feel strange at first but most people adjust quickly. Your dentist can give you advice on ways to adjust to your new dentures.
If you take your dentures out at night, you should keep them moist by placing them in a glass of water or on some damp cotton wool. This ensures that the dentures do not dry out and change shape.
