Root Canal Treatment (also known as Endodontics) is a procedure undertaken by dentists to treat an infection in the root canal, which is at the centre of the tooth.
An infection in the root canal is caused by bacteria in the mouth which damages the tooth pulp.
This bacteria finds its way the tooth and can happen for a few reasons including:
Your dentist will take an x-ray to see whether the tooth pulp is infected. The symptoms of an infection can include:
As the infection spreads within the tooth pulp, the pulp itself will die and the above symptoms may go away. This may indicate that the tooth has healed, however, it does, in fact, mean that the infection has spread to the root canal system.
If the infection has spread to the root canal system, you may find that the original symptoms return. You may also experience additional symptoms, including:
It is important to see your dentist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, as ignoring the issue may cause it to worsen.
Your dentist will remove the bacteria from your root canal system. This procedure will usually require you to have a general anaesthetic and is no more uncomfortable than having a filling.
The infected tooth will sometimes be removed but this is more unusual.
9 out of 10 times, a Root Canal Treatment will successfully resolve the problem. And you should experience no further symptoms.
